Cream of Rice UAE 2026: Why Lifters Eat It Before Training
Short answer
Cream of rice is finely milled white rice with nothing added. Lifters eat it before training because it has almost no fibre, so it empties the stomach fast and delivers glucose quickly without sitting heavy. Oats are the better daily breakfast; cream of rice is the better pre-workout meal when you train within about 90 minutes of eating.
Cream of rice has quietly become a staple in UAE gym bags, and most of the people scooping it could not tell you what is in the tub. It is rice flour. Milled white rice, ground fine enough to cook into porridge in two minutes. The reason lifters eat it before training is not a nutrition secret — it digests fast and sits light, and for a pre-workout meal that is most of what matters.
What cream of rice actually is
Cream of rice is white rice and nothing else. Cook it with water or milk and you get a smooth, slightly sweet porridge. Because the grain is already broken down and the bran is gone, your gut has very little work to do: the meal clears the stomach quickly and the glucose reaches your blood fast.
That speed is the entire point. The 2021 international glycemic index tables place white rice products firmly in the high-GI band, meaning the carbohydrate converts to blood glucose quickly and with little resistance. For a meal you want out of your stomach before you train, high GI and near-zero fibre are features, not flaws.
A typical serving is around 40 grams of carbohydrate, almost no fat, and one to two grams of fibre. The same weight of oats carries four to five times that fibre.
Why the fibre in oats works against you before a session
Oats are the better breakfast for most people on most days, and the reason is beta-glucan — the soluble fibre that makes oat porridge thick. Beta-glucan raises the viscosity of the meal sitting in your stomach. A controlled trial published in 2020 found that increasing oat beta-glucan viscosity in a breakfast slowed gastric emptying and blunted the blood glucose and insulin response.
For daily health that is a good outcome: slower, steadier energy. Sixty minutes before a heavy squat session it is the opposite of what you want. A thick, slow-emptying meal still in your stomach under load is how you end up burping it back or cutting the session short. Cream of rice sidesteps that by having almost no fibre to slow it down.
This is the honest trade. Oats win on nutrition. Cream of rice wins on timing. They are not competitors; they are tools for different jobs, and most people should own both.
When cream of rice earns its place
Not everyone needs a fast pre-workout carb. It is worth using when:
- You train within 60 to 90 minutes of eating and a normal meal sits heavy
- You train early and cannot face solid food but still need fuel in the tank
- You are bulking and struggle to hit a high carbohydrate target from whole foods alone
- You do two sessions in a day and need to refuel fast between them
If you train several hours after a full meal, you already have fuel on board and cream of rice adds nothing that a slice of toast would not. It is a convenience, not a requirement.
How to use it
The ISSN position stand on nutrient timing is clear that a carbohydrate-containing meal before training supports performance in longer or glycogen-demanding sessions, and that the closer you eat to training, the smaller and simpler that meal should be.
In practice:
- 40 to 60 grams of carbohydrate from cream of rice, 60 to 90 minutes before you train
- Cook it with water if time is short, milk if you want more protein and tolerate dairy that close to a session
- Stir in a scoop of whey or some egg whites to make it a complete pre-workout meal
- Salt, cinnamon or a little honey fix the texture, which is bland on its own
There is very little to check on the label because there is very little in the tub. Confirm it is 100 percent rice with no added sugar or oil, and read the grams of carbohydrate per serving so you can size your portion to the target above.
Buying it in the UAE
Cream of rice is cheap to produce, which is why plain infant rice cereal from any supermarket does the same nutritional job. What a sports version buys you is a finer grind that cooks faster and mixes smoother, and flavouring that makes it edible without loading it with sugar.
Storage matters more here than in a cooler climate. A fine flour left open in a Gulf kitchen clumps, and damp flour spoils faster than a sealed bag of oats. Keep the tub closed and dry, and buy a size you will finish within a couple of months rather than the largest one on the shelf.
Applied Nutrition Cream of Rice is the version we stock. It sits in our mass gainers and performance carbs range alongside Carb X for fuelling during long sessions, and the wider Applied Nutrition line. For the intra-workout side of the question, the cyclic dextrin guide covers what to use during training rather than before it.
What we do not claim
Cream of rice does not build muscle, does not burn fat, and is not more anabolic than any other carbohydrate. It is refined rice. The entire case for it is that it digests fast and sits light before training — a real benefit, and a narrow one. If you can eat a normal meal an hour before the gym without discomfort, you do not need it. Anyone selling it as a performance breakthrough is selling you rice flour at a markup.
