Cyclic Dextrin vs Maltodextrin UAE 2026: Which Carb to Train On
Short answer
Cyclic dextrin has a lower osmolality than maltodextrin, so it leaves the stomach faster and sits lighter during work. That only matters past roughly 90 minutes of hard training, when muscle glycogen actually starts to limit you. For a 45-minute session, neither carbohydrate changes anything.
Intra-workout carbohydrate is one of the few supplement categories where the marketing and the science point in roughly the same direction — but only for a specific kind of session. Most people buying cyclic dextrin do not train long enough to need it.
What cyclic dextrin actually is
Highly branched cyclic dextrin is a carbohydrate made by enzymatically restructuring starch into a large, ring-shaped molecule. The point of that structure is osmolality: how much a dissolved substance pulls water into the gut.
Maltodextrin is made of shorter chains, so a given weight of it produces far more individual particles in solution. That raises osmolality, and a high-osmolality drink sits in the stomach drawing water in before it can empty. That is the sloshing feeling, and the reason some people cramp on a sugary intra-workout drink.
Cyclic dextrin has a high molecular weight and low osmolality. Fewer particles, less osmotic pull, faster gastric emptying. The carbohydrate reaches the small intestine sooner and is absorbed sooner.
When that difference matters
Muscle glycogen holds roughly 90 minutes of hard work. Below that, you are not running out of fuel, and carbohydrate during the session changes nothing you can measure. A 45-minute weights session does not deplete glycogen enough for intra-workout carbs to matter.
The threshold where it starts to count:
- Sessions past 90 minutes — long training blocks, two-a-days, endurance work
- Training fasted or early, where liver glycogen is already low
- Training in Gulf heat, where gastric emptying slows and a high-osmolality drink is punished harder
- Two sessions in one day, where the second one starts on a partly empty tank
Outside those, a carbohydrate powder is calories in a shaker. Useful if you struggle to eat enough. Not a performance supplement.
How much, and when
Research on carbohydrate during exercise converges on 30 to 60 grams per hour for single-source carbohydrate, past that first hour of work. Going higher does not help unless you are mixing carbohydrate types to use more than one intestinal transporter, which is an endurance-sport problem, not a gym one.
Practically: start sipping about 20 minutes into a long session rather than drinking it all at once. A concentrated bolus defeats the purpose of choosing a low-osmolality carb in the first place.
Cyclic dextrin against the alternatives
Ranked by how fast they clear the stomach and how they feel during work:
- Cyclic dextrin — fastest emptying, lightest in the stomach, most expensive per gram
- Maltodextrin — absorbs well, cheap, but higher osmolality and more likely to sit heavy
- Dextrose — absorbed fastest at the intestine but the highest osmolality of the three; the most likely to cause gut discomfort in volume
- Real food — fine before training, wrong during it
If a scoop of maltodextrin sits comfortably for you, it does the same job for less. The case for cyclic dextrin is tolerability, not superior absorption once absorbed.
What we do not claim
Cyclic dextrin does not build muscle, does not burn fat, and does not improve a session you were going to finish anyway. It is a fuelling tool for long or repeated work, and a digestion-friendly way to add calories if you are trying to gain. Anyone selling it as an anabolic is selling you starch at a premium.
Buying in the UAE
Two things to check on the tub: that it says highly branched cyclic dextrin rather than a blend where cyclic dextrin is the smallest ingredient, and the grams per serving so you can work out how a 30 to 60 gram hourly target maps onto scoops.
Applied Nutrition Carb X is the cyclic dextrin we stock. It sits in our mass gainers and performance carbs range alongside Cream of Rice for pre-training and the wider Applied Nutrition range.
If your sessions are under an hour, read the pre-workout guide instead — caffeine will do more for you than carbohydrate will.
